Crowdfunding Gives Health and Fitness Gadgets a Real Workout

Crowdfunding Gives Health and Fitness Gadgets a Real Workout

Robert Mullins, CFB Sr. Staff Writer In the wearable computer space, Google Glass has generated the buzz, but the Pebble watch has generated results. Pebble Technology had raised $375,000 from a venture capitalist for a wristwatch computer that would share information with a user’s Apple or Android OS smartphone, but was unable to raise more. In April 2012, Pebble signed up with the crowdfunding company Kickstarter and took off. By May of that year, Pebble had raised a total of more than $10 million and by July 4 of this year, it had sold 85,000 units…

Medical Crowdfunding Attracts Top Silicon Valley Investors

Medical Crowdfunding Attracts Top Silicon Valley Investors

Watsi has become the first charitable company to raise over $1 million in funding from traditional “angel investors” in Silicon Valley. The non-profit had already made history when it received backing from Paul Graham‘s elite Silicon Valley incubator Y Combinator. Graham wrote, “After about 30 seconds of looking at the site, I realized I was looking at one of the more revolutionary things I’d seen the Internet used for.” Watsi — one of the fastest growing non-profits in web history — puts up pictures and profiles of people around the world who need money for medical care. “I think…

Crowdcube’s first fundraiser beauty start-up Bubble & Balm throws in the towel

The very real risks of investing in start-ups have come to a head after the announcement Bubble & Balm, the first company to raise money via crowdfunding site Crowdcube, has ceased trading. The news is a blow for crowdfunding which has become one of the fastest growing investment sectors in the country. The Financial Times reported this week that the fair trade soap manufacturer asked Companies House to be struck off. Its website, Twitter account and Facebook page have been taken down. Crowdfunding works by sidestepping the banks to directly connect businesses and investors – and…

Crowdfunding – Fertility treatment and adoption alternatives

Crowdfunding – Fertility treatment and adoption alternatives

The newest industry to gain momentum via crowdfunding platforms is fertility treatments and adoption. Parents are beginning to test the waters and seriously consider crowdfunding as an effective alternative in getting funds to solve issues with infertilities. It was almost unheard of until 2011 when a couple started a campaign to raise money to support their fertility treatments. The project has successfully raised more than $8,000 and Landon Haley is the first baby born by means of crowdfunding. More and more parents are looking for other ways of getting financial aid when it comes to fertility…

Kickstarter: An iPhone Kitchen Thermometer, From the Inventors of Twine

Kickstarter: An iPhone Kitchen Thermometer, From the Inventors of Twine

Of all the ordinary things we can now link up to our smartphones and tablets–watches, scales, cars and even those dumb slabs that serve as our front doors–the humble kitchen thermometer doesn’t seem like an especially exciting candidate. But imagine being able to pore over graphs of botched loaves when trying to perfect the elusive art of at-home bread baking. Or being able to keep an eye on the temperature of a bird in the oven while running to the store to grab some forgotten supply. Or even just being able to monitor its temperature without…

Healthcare crowdfunding startup Watsi raises $1.2 million

A group of influential investors has backed Y Combinator’s first nonprofit graduate, Watsi, which applies crowdfunding to financing health care in third world countries. I wrote about the company when it was accepted into Y Combinator back in January. It was founded by three former Peace Corps volunteers — Chase Adam,Mark Murrin and Howard Glenn — and a tech consultant, Jesse Cooke. This week’s $1.2 million funding came from a large group of 16 investors, including Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham, angel investor Ron Conway and venture investor Vinod Khosla. San Francisco-based Watsi helps the world’s poor pay medical bills through small donations. Donors choose who they want…

Woman with breast cancer “humbled” by crowdfunding effort to reduce medical bills

(CBS News) Web sites like Kickstarter are becoming a popular way to raise money, for everything from indie films to garage bands. But what about crowdfunding for health care? CBS News recently met one woman, Amelia Coffaro, who is counting on it. The 28-year-old is in the fight of her life. She was diagnosed in February with an aggressive form of inflammatory breast cancer. She started chemotherapy on Valentine’s Day and underwent a double mastectomy less than six weeks later. Dr. Alysandra Lal, a surgical oncologist for Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis., is her…

Meet Consano, The Crowdfunding Platform That Wants To Help Cure Cancer

Meet Consano, The Crowdfunding Platform That Wants To Help Cure Cancer

Crowdfunding has been a godsend for getting lots of projects off the ground that otherwise may not have attracted dollars from traditional powers-that-be in retail manufacturing, music, movies, and the like. So at a time when the federal dollars that typically fund medical research are under more constraint than ever, doesn’t it make sense to bring that same model that has worked so well for wristwatches and rock albums to work for curing breast cancer and new methods for lung transplants? That’s what Molly Lindquist believes, so she founded a non-profit organization called Consano for allowing…
