Crowdfunding Culture: Namaste, and Welcome to the Smithsonian

Crowdfunding Culture: Namaste, and Welcome to the Smithsonian

This Monday, the Smithsonian was scheduled to wrap up the biggest crowdfunding campaign ever undertaken by an American museum. The subject of the exhibition in question? Yoga. At the time of this writing, the Freer Sackler Galleries have decided to extend their month-long campaign another week, and have already surpassed their $125,000 goal by over $4,000. Clearly, this is one show the population of D.C. will pay to see. As a spokeswoman said, “There are between 20 and 40 million yoga practitioners in the United States, and an ethos of community that already surrounds yoga. If…

Healthcare startup looks to IndieGoGo

Health Tech Hatch, a site launched last fall as a crowdfunding site specifically for health startups, is joining forces with one of the biggest crowdfunding platforms on the web, Indiegogo. From the beginning, the company planned to help health startups both crowdfund and beta test their products with patients and physicians. But now, founder and CEO Patricia Salber said Health Tech Hatch plans to focus more closely on the beta testing side, while working on the crowdfunding piece through Indiegogo. “We quickly learned that it’s really, really hard to raise much money if you’re trying to raise…

Fitness ideas get financial muscle

Ryon Lane wanted to run to yoga class. There was just one problem with that plan: his mat. A three-mile jog from Capitol Hill to Dupont Circle with a rolled-up piece of rubber resting on his shoulder wasn’t particularly appealing. So the lawyer hopped online to shop for a mat he could fold up and stash in a backpack. Lane couldn’t find one, which is why people searching for a similar product today are stumbling across his Kickstarter campaign for the YogoMat. The lightweight design — with attached straps that allow for easy cleaning and drying…

Need for “passion capital” investors to crowdfund new cures

The future of bioscience funding, and the search for important new cures to serious diseases, requires a triad of investment that includes public funding, philanthropy-supported research, and passion-based crowdfunding, according to Gregory Simon, CEO of Poliwogg, an online platform that matches young companies with accredited investors. Speaking this week on a Milken Global Conference panel, Financing the Future of Bioscience and Pharma, Simon asserted to his co-panelists that US healthcare innovation is stifled by a funding gap. “Many emerging companies are viewed as too early stage for venture capital. Yet the drive for new cures –…

Medical Care, Aided by the Crowd

TWO years ago, Chase Adam, a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica, was riding a bus through a town called Watsi, when a woman got on board asking for money. Her son, she said, needed medical attention and she couldn’t pay for it. As the woman walked through the bus, she showed people a copy of her son’s medical record. Mr. Adam, who is now 26, noticed that nearly everyone donated money. Watsi raised money for Chenda, top, a 1-year-old boy in Cambodia, who badly burned his hand. Nuro, 11, of Ethiopia, will have foot surgery,…

HealthCare: When Crowdfunding Is A Matter Of Life And Death

When Matt Fahey, a cameraman for Deadliest Catch, was diagnosed with colon cancer last November, he didn’t have health insurance. He nonetheless went through with surgery and got stuck with a $51,000 bill. Facing six months of follow-up treatments and a six-figure total cost, bankruptcy seemed almost inevitable. Instead, his cousin, Chuck Horton, a former professional fundraiser-turned-software-entrepreneur, stepped in and set up a Rally.org campaign called “Dumb Ass Cancer” to help pay for Fahey’s treatment. “We wanted something up and running quicker than a traditional fundraiser,” says Horton. “Matt has a lot of friends on Facebook.…
