Music Boy Band Legend, Nick Carter turns to Indiegogo to fund Horror Film.

Nick Carter, one of the members of popular 90s boy band, the Backstreet Boys, is making a comeback not in the music industry but as an executive producer for a horror movie. He is seeking funding by launching a crowdfunding campaign in Indiegogo. Unbeknownst to his fans, Nick Carter has always been an aficionado for horror movies and dreamt about being a film producer as well as a screenwriter. Partnering with Sxully Essex, also a film maker and screenwriter, the horror flick is called ‘Evil Blessings’. It is ‘about 3 friends who go up to the…

West Yorkshire songstress’s crowd-funding website appeal

West Yorkshire songstress’s crowd-funding website appeal

Music has been the sole passion for Kelly Mueller since she was seven-years-old, and when she was signed by international label Universal Records she thought her dreams had come true. The talented singer/ songwriter, who goes by the stage name of Kell on Urth, has spent time living in Los Angeles and London working on projects with the likes of Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson and The Script but her own album failed to materialise.   After three years with Universal, the 27-year-old, who lives in Darrington, near Pontefract, decided to go it alone and is hoping to release her…

Audiodraft, The Crowdsourcing Platform For Sound And Music, Raises $400K From 500 Startups & Promus Ventures

Audiodraft, a platform where brands or anybody else can commissions custom music or sounds, just closed $400,000 in a funding round led by 500 Startups and Promus Ventures. The best analogy for what the startup does is 99Designs for sound. Founded three years ago, the company has grown a community of about 20,000 sound designers and music composers who are available to create music or sounds for different advertising agencies and clients on commission. There’s also a library on-hand tracks so that customers can drop by and buy licenses for music for anywhere from $400 to $2,000.…

Universal Music Reviving Vinyls With Crowdfunding Service

Universal Music Reviving Vinyls With Crowdfunding Service

Forget digital music files or streaming services: Vinyl is back. Well, it’s re-emerging at least for fans of Universal Music’s catalog of albums. UVinyl — Universal Music’s vinyl branch — is developing a “crowd-funded vinyl service” that will release limited-edition records of old “deleted” albums if there’s enough demand. “The Vinyl Project” will re-press deleted and rare records into vinyl, and release them with digital downloads and personalized art prints. This service is reportedly going to work with Kickstarter-style crowdfunding. Complete Music Update reports that among the records being considered for release already include The Jackson 5′s “ABC,” Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and Sonic Youth’s “Goo.” Ah,…

Moniker Looks To Crowdfunding To Create A Custom Guitar Business

Moniker Looks To Crowdfunding To Create A Custom Guitar Business

Austin-based Moniker Guitars is running a Kickstarter campaign to create a line of semi-hollow-body guitars for discerning git-fiddlists. The company will offer their first guitars for a $700 pledge, not bad for a hand-made guitar from rockabilly city. The company is looking for $50,000 to start and they’ve just passed the $6,000 mark. The company already customizes solid-body guitars and hopes that the fund will help them build a line of semi-hollow-body models. “Through our online guitar configurator you can choose your guitar’s shape, paint colors and parts, as well as add custom text and graphics;…

Crowdfunding disrupts record labels & the music industry

Crowdfunding disrupts record labels & the music industry

The largest providers of capital in the music business, the major record labels, have been devastated over the last decade by the disruption of their core competency: selling recorded music and investing profits into the development of new talent.  Global music sales have been contracting for over a decade, falling from $27.8b in 2000 to $16.5b in 2012. 1 It doesn’t take an economist to explain the effect: there is less cash available to fund artists. Furthermore, talent development is a high-risk business. Traditionally, nine out of ten artists who are signed do not generate a positive return-on-investment,…

An Interview with Mark Kelly of Marillion

Mark Kelly knows a thing or thirty about the music industry. He’s served as keyboardist of the English band Marillion for more than three decades. Today, few musicians have his perspective on the business of music. For instance, for the last few years, crowdfunding and sites like KickStarter have been all the rage. Kelly and his band recognized the vast potential of the Internet a remarkable fifteen years ago. Marillion was one of-if not the-first group to reach out directly to its fans via the Internet. Marillion used the burgeoning platform to fund his band’s twelfth…

Amanda Palmer to Morrissey: Let me help you crowdsource your next album

Dear Morrissey, I will tell you: I am a passionate admirer of your songwriting, your singing and your recordings. I’ve bought tickets to see you lots of times. You shaped my head and my heart as a teenager, and to this day continue to impact my various artistic forays. You helped open me, you taught me that I could be brutally honest in my songs and that I didn’t need to wait for anyone’s permission. You helped teach me that I could sing about anything I wanted to. So, no matter what you are, what you…

Crowd funding a Parade

In the last few years, a lot of artists, inventors, entrepreneurs and half-cocked dreamers have been trying their luck with crowd-funding websites like Kickstarter. The basic idea can sound very appealing, particularly to those who can’t or don’t want to use traditional funding sources: the artist, inventor or entrepreneur takes his or her pitch for a product or a project to a website rather than go through the usual corporate or company channels. Through the Internet, they reach out to fans or a particular community and try to convince them to put their money behind the…
