Crowdfunding: What’s in It for Scientists?

Crowdfunding: What’s in It for Scientists?

It seemed like no one was willing to take a chance on Louisa Edgerly. She had been working for months to get funding for her research trip to the Republic of Congo—nothing came. Her flight was booked and her equipment ready, but she knew she couldn’t fund herself for two months in the field. In near desperation she created a project campaign on Petridish.org, a science based crowdfunding website. 50 days later, and only two days before her flight, Edgerly had raised $7,330- just over her goal of $7,000. For emerging scientists like Edgerly, crowdfunding offers more…

How To Survive a Sociopath Boss

How To Survive a Sociopath Boss

By Cheryl Conner, On Friday, I attended the inaugural Social Enterprise Crowdfunding Conference at the Snowbird Resort near Salt Lake, the project of Forbes Contributor Devin Thorpe and Richard Swart, a crowdfunding expert I’ve collaborated with on various projects before. The conference was a great success and will be recurring twice yearly. (Disclosure–my agency was one of the silver sponsors at the inaugural event and I was an event speaker.)  I’ll write more about the event later on. One of the great side benefits, though, was the ability to catch up in an informal environment with great entrepreneurial friends. In…

Enterprise Crowdfunding: How an IBM experiment improved innovation

Enterprise Crowdfunding: How an IBM experiment improved innovation

by David Drake Can the principles of crowdfunding work within the walls of an established corporation such as IBM? With the popularity of Kickstarter, Indiegogo and Kiva, crowdfunding has taken a new turn inward in corporate America. We are calling the trend Intranet or Enterprise Crowdfunding. Instead of going out to seek financing, technology giant IBM saw the internet fundraising model as a viable way to generate engagement and participation within its own ranks, and to spark innovation and collaboration by its own employees. On August 28, I had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Muller of…

If Crowdfunding is the New Day Trading, Look Out

Paul Volcker famously said the only financial innovation to improve society in recent memory was the ATM. Not everyone agrees. In an essay earlier this week on the evolution of money and finance, GigaOM founder and venture capitalist Om Malik argued that crowdfunding will be the new day trading, the latest financial innovation to “cut costs and [drive] wider participation in a previously closed and clubby market.” Advocates of crowdfunding had better hope not. To be clear, Malik isn’t talking about Kickstarter where funders make a donation that acts like a pre-order. He’s talking about the…

It’s Not About the Money: Kickstarter and Celebrity Campaigns

KQED – Michele Carlson – People are pissed. The new trend that’s got everyone heated is the rise of celebrities using online crowdfunding platforms, like Kickstarter or Indiegogo, to fund their high-budget passion projects. Popular history suggests these platforms are for “the little guys,” or those left out of other funding sources, to have a place to find funds for their creative projects. And fund they do. According to Kickstarter’s website, over $798 million have been given to over 48,000 projects. Except $5,702,153 of that went to Rob Thomas’ campaign to make a Veronica Mars movie.…

The Great Philanthropy Disruption

The stodgy world of philanthropy is about to be disrupted, and this disruption will fundamentally change and improve the way we integrate the act of philanthropy in to our daily lives. This year, Americans will donate more than $300 billion to charity. The vast majority of these donations will be small and they will be distributed to more than 1.6 million not-for-profit, tax-exempt organizations. While the data are limited, it’s clear that online giving is becoming more common. According to a Chronicle of Philanthropy analysis of online donations, more than $2.1 billion was raised online for…

The New Institutional Asset Class: Debt Crowdfunding

The New Institutional Asset Class: Debt Crowdfunding

By David Drake Institutional investors are still licking their wounds after the real estate market crashed and burned during the last global financial crisis. Some say we got into this financial mess because people were buying houses using their credit cards. However, there is a new asset class emerging from the global financial crisis (GFC): Debt crowdfunding. Even Mark Zuckerberg is buying his first residence with his MasterCard. As one of the world’s wealthiest people, he certainly can afford to pay for it with cash. But without new laws to limit the number of houses that…

What Is The Next Crowdfunding Evolution?

It’s been said that crowdfunding is less of a straight-forward investment and more like buying wine futures. You’re essentially paying a discounted rate for next year’s crop. And, just like wine, once you’ve put your money in, you can only hope that the weather is good, the vines aren’t attacked by bugs, and the vintner is as good as he claims. But, this analogy, no matter how clever, falls apart at one crucial stage. With wine, there is already a predetermined market, distribution channels and product awareness. People may not have heard of “Bobby Joe’s Blackberry…

The Midwest’s Venture Capital Problem, And How Crowdfunding Could Help Solve It

“The promise of crowdfunding to the general public as defined in the JOBS Act isn’t going to reach its full potential because the JOBS Act itself sets very high barriers to entry,” Korn said. “There’s no way a company would opt for crowdfunding if they had any other way of capital raising.” Crowdfunding will never replace classic venture capital or angel investing. Catalini of MIT, however, says a hybrid model may become more common, where entrepreneurs, especially in regions like the Midwest, combine crowdfunding with more traditional methods of raising capital. The story of Zach Supalla’s…

Crowdfunding’s Evolving: The Next Big ‘Profitable’ Thing

NEW YORK (TheStreet) — It seems like ages ago that nascent start-ups like Facebook (FB_) and LinkedIn (LNKD_) were reinventing how billions of people around the globe would stay both socially and professionally connected.
