Was bewegt diese Projektinhaber? Meistens kennen…

Crowdfunded nanosatellites unleashed in orbit

Crowdfunded nanosatellites unleashed in orbit

Alan Boyle, Science Editor NBC News – Nov. 19, 2013 – Two tiny satellites supported by Kickstarter campaigns were kicked out into orbit from the International Space Station on Tuesday, beginning what’s expected to be a months-long citizen science mission. NanoSatisfi’s ArduSat 1 and ArduSat X nanosatellites were deployed by a Japanese-built, spring-loaded launcher attached to the space station. A Vietnamese-built nanosat called PicoDragon was sent out as well. All three satellites were built to CubeSat specifications, 4 inches (10 centimeters) on each side, and delivered to the station in August aboard an unmanned Japanese cargo…

What Obama’s Vision of OFA Means for CrowdFunding

What Obama’s Vision of OFA Means for CrowdFunding

BY Rodrigo Davies As the field of civic crowdfunding emerges and grows, it is spawning many competing visions of what the field is and where its appeal comes from. Lately I’ve been thinking about questions such as: How much is crowdfunding about community and shared values? How much is it about physical places? How much is it about a desire to participate and feel agency, and how much is it about ownership? It’s unlikely to be just one of the above, and surely differs across contexts. But there are instances that present one vision over the others.…

A new plea from professors: Buy my idea

A new plea from professors: Buy my idea

Shawn Graham is used to pleading the case for his work. A professor in the history department at Carleton University, he spends ample time competing for research grants, filling out forms and relying on rhetorical skills he honed as a grad student. But for his latest project – setting up research fellowships in digital research for his students – he is bypassing the usual expert panels that hold the purse strings and taking his pitch directly to the public via crowdfunding. “The traditional route has one pot of money that every academic chases. But everybody has…

Scientists Compile ‘Census Of The Galaxies’ Using Power Of The Crowd

Scientists Compile ‘Census Of The Galaxies’ Using Power Of The Crowd

Astronomers have sought the aid of enthusiastic amateurs to help them take on the Herculean task of studying the cosmos. Cutting-edge instruments allow us to peer deep into time and space. But back on Earth, there are still just 24 hours in a day. That’s the conundrum researchers have increasingly faced in recent years, as the quantity of images returned by telescopes has outpaced attempts at organizing them. Now, an international group of scientists is tackling that problem by harnessing people power, plus the Internet, to help them take on the enormity of the universe. The…

Georgia Tech Launches Its Own Crowdfunding Site For Science Research

By launching a fundraising site specifically for its researchers, Georgia Tech adds a review process and lab fees to the crowdfunding process. Allison Jo Mercer, a researcher at Georgia Tech, is developing an adhesive based on a brilliantly sticky fish. Her work could some day translate into Band-Aids that don’t pull your hair out when you rip them off, safer bandages for serious wounds, or just a better way to stick your GPS unit to your car window. But when she looked for funding for the idea, the reality of decreased government science spending sunk in…

Scientists discover ‘crowdfunding’ as a way of replacing research grants

Scientists discover ‘crowdfunding’ as a way of replacing research grants

Traditional scientific funding proposals typically do not ask donors to “crowdfund my meth lab, yo,” but then young scientist Ethan Perlstein isn’t taking the traditional route to underwrite his research. Like an increasing number of scientists who have seen public grants and investments shrivel, Mr. Perlstein has broken away from traditional sources of scientific funding and turned to the Web, social media and “crowdfunding” to raise money for his efforts. “Government grant funding system is pretty bleak” outside of the most promising proposals, Mr. Perlstein said. “Projects will get more success with how much energy researchers…

Omate TrueSmart watch beats Kickstarter goal in a day

Omate TrueSmart watch beats Kickstarter goal in a day

As Samsung prepares for its long-anticipated smartwatch launch, New York-based Omate has smashed the funding target for its own TrueSmart wrist-mounted device. Omate Truesmart, a water-resistant smartwatch with a built-in 5-megapixel camera, reached its $100,000 (£63,700) crowdfunding target in less than one day, and has now raised more than double its original goal, with $232,317 (£149,000) pledged and 28 days of the campaign remaining. Most of the smartwatches launched to date have been intended as Bluetooth companion accessories to a smartphone, but TrueSmart claims to be “a new generation of Smartwatch 2.0,” operating both independently from…

The Kickstarter Culture Wars

The Kickstarter Culture Wars

Plans to grow genetically modified plants ignited a firestorm at Kickstarter. They shouldn’t have Whether lit by Fairies in a children’s book or special-effects magic in Avatar, the sight of plants glowing in the dark has a special charm. We respond to lighted plants with wonder and joy. So it’s not surprising that a plan to produce glow-in-the-dark plants proved wildly popular on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding website. In 44 days, the project raised more than $484,000–more than seven times the goal of $65,000–from 8,433 donors. Using genes from bioluminescent bacteria or fireflies, the project aims to…
