Crowdfunding Could Help Cleantech Attract Institutional Investors

Crowdfunding Could Help Cleantech Attract Institutional Investors

Crowdfunding may be a natural fit for cleantech, where conventional early-stage funding has fallen off. Last year global venture capital flows to the sector plunged 33 percent, to $6.46 billion. When Pi Investments recently lent $200,000 to solar energy projects via Internet crowdfunding platform Mosaic, it saw more than an opportunity to back clean technology. The Chicago-based family office was also keen to “peek under the hood” of a new investment infrastructure, says director of impact investments Aner Ben-Ami. Through crowdfunding outfits like Oakland, California-based Mosaic, small and medium-size U.S. companies can offer debt and soon…

Academic Researchers look to Crowdfunding Platforms

Academic Researchers look to Crowdfunding Platforms

When a professor from a small liberal arts college in central Pennsylvania decided to take on a massive research project two summers ago, he went through the usual, often futile, process of applying for federal and private grants. But when funds were short a year later, he went down a nontraditional route — turning to the public and the Internet for help. In 50 days, Juniata College’s Chris Grant and his research partner, Gina Lamendella, raised $10,800 through a crowdfunding website called iAMscientist. The money was used to fund an ongoing project on the impacts of…

Funded Kickstarter campaign continues debate about genetically modified organisms

Funded Kickstarter campaign continues debate about genetically modified organisms

Crowdfunded US biohackers are set to make world’s first deliberate environmental release of a ‘synthetic biology’ organism Who wouldn’t want a flower that can glow in the dark? And what if it were pitched as the coming wave of a sustainable future, in which luminous plants and trees supplant light bulbs and street-lamps? You might even be tempted to buy one, right? At first glance, it’s hard not to be seduced by a new crowd-funded Kickstarter.com project to engineer and circulate glow-in-the-dark plants. Especially when the US company behind it invokes the possibility of turning your living room into the…

Space Telescope Crowdfunding Project Raises Over $200,000 on First Day

A commercial asteroid-mining company aiming to launch a crowdfunded space telescope raised more than $200,000 on the first day of its campaign. Planetary Resources, a private venture aiming to mine near-Earth space rocks for water, minerals and other resources, announced Wednesday (May 29) that it would build and launch a space telescope for public use if it could raise at least $1 million in 33 days. The telescope will be a twin copy of the Arkyd spacecraft the company is developing to detect, track and study asteroids in preparation for its mining mission. A test version…

Westneat: UW chemist’s coal project gets crowdfunded — in record time

SEATTLE — Dan Jaffe says he didn’t set out intending to go all rogue with his science. “What happened is I was getting discouraged,” he says. “I was starting to wonder whether anyone would even be allowed to ask these basic questions. So I went outside the system.” Jaffe is no anarchist, but an atmospheric chemist at the University of Washington. For 20-plus years he’s followed the conventional path for doing science in this country, which is to apply for grants from the government or corporate-backed groups. He’s been good at it, too, winning $7.2 million…

Extraordinary Popular Enthusiasms and Funding from Crowds

On the Good.is website right now is an appeal from Tyler Alterman, a matriculating neuroscientist and self-described scientific detective, seeking cash support for The Think Tank, his lab-on-wheels. This rolling experimentation station will travel the New York metro area to both teach the masses about cognition and to draw them into studies about brain function. Here’s “the plan,” as taken from Alterman’s appeal page at IndieGoGo: TTT will be an art+science team-up between artists and scientists from Tyler Alterman’s lab. Together we will transform a recycled box truck into a fully functioning lab with a glowing…

Dark Snow Project’s Crowdfunded Climate Science Experiment

By: Mary Catherine O’Connor Everything is connected; a catastrophic weather event in one hemisphere can have ripple effects on the other side of the globe. That is no news to climate scientists. But last summer, as the United States was in the throes of one of its worst wildfire seasons on record, climate scientist Jason Box, who studies Greenland’s ice sheet, wondered about a direct link between those fires and the frightening speed at which the ice sheet was melting. Among the fires last summer were large tundra blazes in Alaska and Canada. Box used weather…
