University of Toronto Professor: Preparing for the chaos of equity crowdfunding

Equity crowdfunding is not yet legal, but when it is, expect a period of “chaos” before those involved learn how to make the most of its benefits and minimize its risks, say University of Toronto researchers. “There’s no question that there will be fraud and that some investors will lose money, but that’s true in every market. This is a new market and we suspect there will be a steep learning curve for all participants – entrepreneurs, investors, crowdfunding platforms, and regulators,” says Ajay Agrawal, an associate professor of strategic management at the University of Toronto’s Rotman…

Fundable Infographic: Explanation of SEC Announcement & What that means for startups and entrepreneurs

July 10th, 2013 was a monumental day for Fundable and startups across the country. The SEC announced that the ban on general solicitation has been removed for small businesses seeking startup capital, allowing for sweeping changes in the way businesses find funding. This announcement is a productive step forward to fully enact the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (JOBS Act) passed in early April of 2012. With general solicitation now permitted, startups have the opportunity raise money from a wider range of investors – potentially accelerating their funding. With the SEC’s recent announcements, we’ve gotten an outpouring…

Is Crowdfunding The Future For Biomedical Research?

Is Crowdfunding The Future For Biomedical Research?

Microryza.com (not the catchiest of names) is a crowdfunding platform for research that raises money over the Internet from individuals who are willing to donate small amounts to fund a specific project. The average donation according to Microryza is $92. In return for a 5 percent cut of funds raised and a 3 percent credit card processing fee, Microryza provides researchers access to a website where they can solicit money from the public to fund their research. Crowdfunding is typically an all-or-nothing deal, where donors only have to pay their pledged support if the project is…

Pirate Bay founder crowdfunds messaging app to combat government spying

One of the Pirate Bay file-sharing site’s founders has announced plans for a “totally secure” rival to WhatsApp and Apple’s iMessage services.  Hemlis, which means secret in Swedish, will use end-to-end encryption so messages are seen only by the sender and recipient. Peter Sunde said it was a response to governments spying on users’ data. The iOS and Android project is quickly approaching its $100,000 (£149,133) funding target. However, Apple and WhatsApp say communications using their services are already “fully encrypted”. Blackberry is also planning to extend its BBM chat service – which can be made…

What A Map Of Kickstarter Usage Tells Us About America

What A Map Of Kickstarter Usage Tells Us About America

There’s an outstanding new paper out on NBER today by Ajay Agrawal, Christian Catalini and Avi Goldfarb that looks at the simple economics of crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, where people post project ideas that they hope to get funded from the masses. While the whole paper is absolutely worth a read, one map at the end gave us a fascinating look at who is getting all that Kickstarter money and for what.  Check it out:   Some of the more interesting findings: California and New York dominate when it comes to funding, especially in both the arts…

Deloitte predicts crowdfunding portals will raise over $3 billion in 2013

See complete video interview and article here: Deloitte Technology Media Telecommunications Deloitte predicts that crowdfunding portals will raise $3 billion in 2013,  double the $1.5 billion raised in 2011. Crowdfunding’s growth matters to TMT for two reasons.  First, some crowdfunded projects raise funds for new technological devices and media content such as computer games.…

The New “Soft” Money in Film-Financing Ecosystem

The New “Soft” Money in Film-Financing Ecosystem

They may not have realized this but more than forty-six thousand individuals – many of them ordinary Americans with no prior film industry knowledge – had a direct bearing on what has been happening this past week thousands of miles away at the Cannes Film Festival. Not so much on the rain-sodden red carpet action, as on the business dealings that went on in the makeshift offices of the French film sales company Wild Bunch just a short distance away from that nightly fusillade of flashbulbs. For it is here that Zach Braff’s “Wish I Was Here,”…
