FundingDream Aims to Reinvigorate Crowdfunding in China

Can a crowdfunding site succeed in China? If a new company can get the attention of a small percent of China’s more than 1.4 billion people, the impact could be huge, and the revenue even bigger. Still in private beta and launching in early December, FundingDream is an all-or-nothing setup resembling the Kickstarter model. Campaigns are funded and contributors charged only if they meet monetary goals.FundingDream will focus on socially conscious projects, businesses and charities, applying a 10% fee to collected funds (Kickstarter takes 5% of total raised funds when goals are met). Project creation or backing is open to anyone, as opposed…

Kickstarter Launches in Canada

Kickstarter Launches in Canada

People based in Canada can now build Kickstarter projects, the crowdfunding platform announced Monday. To begin, Canadian users must click on the site’s “Start a new project” button and select “Canada” in the drop-down list, according to a blog post. Projects will open to the public starting Sept. 9. “We thought the month-long gap would give everyone plenty of time to build and tweak their projects before launching,” the post said. Canada-based Kickstarter projects will function in the exact same way as those in the U.S. and UK — including all-or-nothing funding and rewards — with…

Toronto man crowd-funds to become Mobilicity’s white knight

Toronto man crowd-funds to become Mobilicity’s white knight

A Toronto resident has started a $400-million crowd-funding campaign to purchase Mobilicity, arguing the struggling new-entrant carrier must be saved to preserve competition in the $19-billion wireless market. Vaughan, Ont.-based Mobilicity, which is legally known as Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises Holdings Inc., is currently in early-stage takeover talks with Verizon Communications Inc. But it seems the U.S. telecom behemoth is not Mobilicity’s only interested suitor. A male, who self-identifies as “Valya Michael” on the Indiegogo crowd-funding platform, is also eyeing a takeover of the start-up carrier and is canvassing grassroots Canadians to raise the necessary funds.…

Crowdfunding’s many goals: from building schools to busting mayors

Crowdfunding’s many goals: from building schools to busting mayors

Crippled by mounting financial debt, father and son duo David and Brian Best had few options left to save the potato farm their family has operated in Tryon, P.E.I., since the early 1930s. It was a customer who dropped in to Best Acre Farms to buy seed potatoes that sparked the family’s current bid to save their livelihood – crowdfunding. “I told him I was pulling strings to find out how I can source money, and he said, ‘Well, you might try crowdfunding,’ ” said Brian Best. Best did just that and, without a crop in…

A rare look into crowdfunding in Japan: Interview with video game – Monken – creators

A rare look into crowdfunding in Japan: Interview with video game – Monken – creators

Original Article/Interview from IndieGames: Team Grand Slam, a collection of veteran Japanese developers behind the upcoming free-to-play Monken, recently ran a successful crowdfunding campaign on a Japanese platform called Campfire. They raised just under ¥2.5 million ($25,000 USD) for the development of a game they plan to release under a Creative Commons license. That may not seem like much money compared to the amounts raised by developers like Double Fine and Obsidian, but it’s the largest amount raised for a game on this Japanese crowdfunding site to date. We mentioned this back in March, but Monken is an upcoming free-to-play game in which…

Why crowdfunding hasn’t caught on in Asia

Why crowdfunding hasn’t caught on in Asia

The popular fundraising method hasn’t stuck yet. It’s only a matter of time. FORTUNE — The crowdfunding industry made it clear it isn’t going anywhere last year. Popular crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo made it simple for entrepreneurs to fund their creative projects by soliciting donations from the general public. With more than 600 platforms worldwide, crowdfunding has grown from a $530 million industry in 2009 to nearly $2.7 billion last year, according to a recent study by Massolution, a research firm specializing in crowdsourcing businesses. David Drake exclusive – Italy’s Growth Act Implemented Ahead of the American JOBS Act

Italy has just circumvented the delay of the US in changing its laws in order for crowdfunding for equity to become a functional law and has now become the first country in the world to implement changed laws that support crowdfunding for equity, potentially a year ahead of the lethargic U.S. equity crowdfunding law. Crowdfunding has been changing the financial landscape of Italy ever since the Italian parliament voted to implement a crowdfunding law last December 17, 2012. It then tasked the Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB), the equivalent of the Securities…
