Woodstock Film Festival: Panel sheds light on burgeoning practice

Woodstock Film Festival: Panel sheds light on burgeoning practice

Woodstock Film Festival: Crowdfunding – it isn’t a dirty word “Today, just about everyone I know is doing a crowdfunding thing,” said Meira Blaustein. It’s true. Today’s creative workers are asking their friends, and their friends – and so on, and so on – for both emotional and monetary help to finish their projects. Thanks to the internet, an emerging sense of global collaboration and a greater variety of avenues, it has become easier for creative workers to find funding opportunities. But there is still risk, and there are still issues to tackle when attempting to…

Ayn Rand Would Have Loved Kickstarter

Ayn Rand Would Have Loved Kickstarter

What does it mean that the makers of the final installment of a three-part film adaptation of Ayn Rand’s controversial 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged are asking for donations at the crowdfunding site Kickstarter? Isn’t that the book where characters pledge to “never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine”? To critics of the first two movies in the trilogy (released in 2010 and 2011) and of Rand’s stridently individualistic philosophy, it’s just the latest indicator that the author of The Virtue of Selfishness and her fans are obnoxious…

Crowdfunding helps reopen White Hart Cafe

Crowdfunding helps reopen White Hart Cafe

Less than six months after the doors of the White Hart Café in downtown Lynchburg closed — seemingly for good — coffee is flowing once again. New owner Abe Loper, like tens of thousands of artists and entrepreneurs throughout the world, turned to the power of the masses to get the Main Street hangout back up and running. “I want my coffee shop back, don’t you?” Loper wrote in the intro to a web page dedicated to raising funds for the relaunch of the downtown staple. After buying the coffee shop, Loper set up a campaign…

“Hollywood Will Permanently Adopt Crowdfunding”

“Hollywood Will Permanently Adopt Crowdfunding”

Indiegogo co-founder Danae Ringelmann doesn’t think it will be long until every studio in town is taking advantage of the crowdfunding model not just to raise an audience, but also to raise money, for their their own blockbuster ambitions. “Its not that far away, actually,” Ringelmann said at TheWrap’s Media Leadership Conference, TheGrill, Tuesday at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. “What we are going to see is studios recognizing the value of unleashing a fan base early before the film comes out, as a tactic to actually identify social influencers online.” “The way they will…

How to Crowdfund a Million Dollar Arts Project

How to Crowdfund a Million Dollar Arts Project

I was sad to note on Monday that, with 14 days to go, the New York City Opera had raised less than 10 percent of its ambitious $1 million target on Kickstarter. The “People’s Opera” has struggled in recent years. It closed its doors in 2008 for a refurbishment that coincided with the Financial Crisis, and has struggled to make ends meet since then. Organizers describe the crowdfunding campaign as “urgent,” but it is only a slice of a larger call for $7 million by the end of September. If the overall campaign fails, the 70-year-old Opera will suspend its…

How Crowdfunding Tells the Story of a Hollywood Legend

How Crowdfunding Tells the Story of a Hollywood Legend

By Robert J. Mullins CFB Sr. Staff Writer: The classic Hollywood image of the film industry was parodied in the 1992 film “The Player,” in which Tim Robbins plays a studio executive constantly being pitched movie ideas like “It’s ‘Out of Africa’ meets ‘Pretty Woman,’” or “’Ghost’ meets ‘Manchurian Candidate.’” But today, you don’t have to grovel before a studio exec, you can just go online and pitch to the crowd. Film is one of the most active categories of crowdfunding tracked by the major platforms such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo and others. But the proliferation of…

TIFF ’13: The crowdfunding of “Hondros”

TIFF ’13: The crowdfunding of “Hondros”

At the TIFF Doc Conference yesterday (September 11), Greg Campbell, director of Hondros: A Life in Frames, shared his practical tips for a successful Kickstarter campaign. Campbell is the co-director and co-producer of an upcoming documentary on his friend, the photojournalist Chris Hondros, who was killed in Libya alongside Tim Hetherington. The film’sKickstarter campaign ran for 30 days in July and August, and had a goal of US$30,000, which was raised in just four days. At the end of its campaign, it raised almost triple that, with a final tally totaling $90,000. As an author by trade, Campbell…

Penn Jillette And Adam Rifkin Crowd Funding Their “Sexy And Scary” Movie, Director’s Cut

Penn Jillette And Adam Rifkin Crowd Funding Their “Sexy And Scary” Movie, Director’s Cut

On September 19th, a Fund Anything campaign is going to launch in support of a film called Director’s Cut. Penn Jillette, the closest thing to a Barnum and Bailey barker in the film and TV right now, is being busy out there on the web, drumming up interest via social media. So far, though, he’s given away very little of what the film will be about. By putting my e-mail address on a mailing list that will, come September 19th, remind me that Jillette wants my money, I received a “prize” gif. This, Jillette says, is…

Sylvester Stallone and John Herzfeld make $250,000 crowdfunding bid to save latest film

Sylvester Stallone and John Herzfeld make $250,000 crowdfunding bid to save latest film

Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone has asked the general public to save his new film, Reach Me, to the tune of $250,000 (£160,000) after the project fell into financial difficulties. Instead of folding production when one of the film’s main investors dropped out during principal photography, the director John Herzfeld and Stallone launched a campaign on the increasingly popular crowdfunding site, Kickstarter. Launched two days ago, they have raised just under $4,000 so far. There are 28 days remaining for the total sum of money to be pledged. Reach Me is a comedy-drama featuring an eclectic group…

Hotline Miami live-action short film turns to crowdfunding

Director and writer Saman Kesh has turned to crowdfunding to get his latest project off the ground: a live-action short film based on Dennaton Games’ bloody top-down action title Hotline Miami. According to the campaign page, Kesh aims to recreate Hotline Miami’s “ferociously energetic gameplay, sexy ’80s art direction and amazing soundtrack” into a character-driven period piece inspired by the title. The film won’t be a “kitschy ’80s flashback” but will seek to replicate and “honor” the passion developer Dennaton Games has shown for its game. The page notes that Dennaton and publisher Devolver Digital are…
